Spieth completes first round at U.S. Open

June 14, 2012

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. -- Texas freshman All-American Jordan Spieth carded a 4-over-par 74 in the opening round of the U.S. Open Championship on Thursday afternoon. This week's event marks the first major of Spieth's career and his sixth alongside the PGA TOUR's elite.

Spieth's first-round scorecard at The Olympic Club included three birdies, seven bogeys and eight pars. He is tied for 52nd place and trails first-round leader Michael Thompson (-4) by eight strokes. Including Thompson, just six players finished under par on the opening day.

Spieth is set to begin Friday's second round on the first tee at 9:59 a.m. Central alongside pros Nick Watney (-1) and Bill Haas (+6). Following 36 holes, the 156-player field will be cut to the low 60 and ties plus anyone within 10 strokes of the leader.

Complete television coverage of Friday's round is available on ESPN.
