OWINGS MILLS, Md. -- The 20th-ranked Texas men's golf team shot an 18-over-par 298 in the first round of the NCAA Championship (Caves Valley Golf Club: Par 70, 7,131 yards) on Wednesday. The Longhorns are in 27th place and stand 24 shots behind Georgia, which holds the first-round lead at six-under-par (274). Junior Matthew Rosenfeld (Plano, Texas) posted an even-par 70 and is tied for 21st place. Georgia's Kevin Kisner and Augusta State's Major Manning are tied for first place on the individual leader board at five-under-par (65).
"We had a tough round today," said Texas head coach John Fields. "The guys will be frustrated, but I expect them to come out with a great round tomorrow. We'll try and get the momentum going early in our round on Thursday and hopefully we can carry it through the next two rounds."
Rosenfeld used six birdies, two bogeys and a controversial quadruple bogey on number 15 to finish at even par. After starting on hole 10, he was two-under-par heading into the par-three 15th. He hit his drive into a hazard and was given a two-stroke penalty for grounding his club in the hazard, despite deciding not to play the ball out of the hazard and returning to the drop zone for his third shot. He ended up making the turn at one-over-par. A bogey on number one left him at two-over-par, but birdies on four and eight helped him finish with a 70.
Junior Matthew Mills (London, England) shot a three-over-par 73 on Wednesday and is tied for 71st place after a round of five bogeys and two birdies. He opened with bogeys on 11, 16 and 17 and made the turn at three-over-par. A bogey on number one dropped him to four-over-par, but he managed to birdie four and seven, combined with a bogey on number five, to finish at three-over-par.
Senior Shaun Goodwin (Spring, Texas) made his only birdie on the final hole of the day and finished with a seven-over-par 77. Junior Jeff Bell (Plano, Texas) carded an eight-over-par 78, while sophomore Farren Keenan (Middlesex, England) finished with an 11-over-par 81.
The Longhorns will start their second round on number one at 12:03 p.m. (Central). To follow the action live, visit TexasSports.com.
