Men's Golf earns No. 1 seed at NCAA Southwest Regional Championship

May 7, 2012

INDIANAPOLIS -- Texas (No. 1 Golfweek) has earned the top seed at the 14-team NCAA Southwest Regional Championship to be held at Jimmie Austin OU Golf Club in Norman, Okla.  One of six NCAA regional championships held across the country, the 54-hole event is set to run from May 17-19.

The low five teams and the low individual not on those teams from each regional will advance to the May 29-June 3 NCAA Championship at Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades, Calif.

Texas is the top-ranked team in the Golfweek/Sagarin Rankings (May 7) and Golf World/Nike Golf Division I College Coaches' Poll (April 12). The Longhorns are anchored by a pair of Ben Hogan Award semifinalists and the Nos. 1 and 2 players per Golfweek in freshman Jordan Spieth and senior Dylan Frittelli.

Texas has won seven tournaments this year, the most since the 1982-83 Longhorn squad accomplished the same feat.

Texas has successfully advanced from the NCAA regional to the NCAA Championships in each of the last five seasons.  The Longhorns finished fifth at the 2011 NCAA West Regional Championship in San Diego, Calif., before tying for 12th place at the 2011 NCAA Championships.
