Men's and Women's Golf teams to host Longhorn Pro-Am
May 4, 2009
AUSTIN, Texas -- The Texas Men’s and Women’s Golf teams, in conjunction with The Longhorn Foundation, will host the Longhorn Golf Pro-Am at The University of Texas Golf Club on Monday, June 1. Participation is limited to the first 20 teams, and is on a first-come, first-served basis. Players can sign up individually or as a team of four to play with one of UT’s touring professionals. The previous Pro-Am featured Ben Crenshaw, Tom Kite, Mark Brooks, Justin Leonard, Kelli Kuehne and Sherri Steinhauer, among others. The Pro-Am benefits The UT Golf Academy, UT Golf Course additions and events hosted at The UT Golf Club, such as the Betsy Rawls Invitational and the Morris Williams Invitational. Funds raised from previous events have already been used to construct The UT Golf Academy and upgrade the golf course and practice facilities. “We’ve been very fortunate to have the involvement and to bring in a lot of great people as a result of their genuine affection for our program,” Men’s Golf coach John Fields said. “We’ve been able to improve our facilities. We have a course that was 7,154 yards and now is up to 7,412 yards and is capable of hosting NCAA Championships. The trickle-down effect with regard to recruiting and preparation for our teams has been remarkable.” The UT Golf Club will host the men’s NCAA Central Regional Championships on May 14-16, and was the home course for the same event on the women’s side last year. “I’m looking forward to experiencing the Longhorn Golf Pro-Am this year and welcoming back our alumni who have taken their games to the professional level,” Women’s Golf coach Martha Richards said.” This event is very special to the Texas golf programs, because it helps us continue to improve upon our facilities. In turn, we’re able to host prestigious collegiate events, including NCAA Regionals, at The University of Texas Golf Club.”
The Pro-Am will kick off on Sunday, May 31 with dinner and a pairings party. Cory Morrow and Pat Green will provide entertainment. A Tour Clinic is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. on Monday, followed by a 10:30 a.m. shotgun start.
