LAST YEAR AT THE BIG 12 CHAMPIONSHIP
Texas placed second at the 2008 Big 12 Championship at Whispering Pines in Trinity, Texas.  The Longhorns shot a nine-over 1,161 through 72 holes and were led by Charlie Holland, who placed sixth at one-over par.  Texas went on to place ninth at the NCAA West Regional to qualify for the NCAA Championships.

TEXAS’ BIG 12 CHAMPIONSHIP HISTORY
Texas collected its first of three Big 12 Conference titles in 2002 when it topped Oklahoma State by one stroke at the Prairie Dunes Country Club, site of this week’s Big 12 Championships.    The Longhorns repeated in 2003, topping Oklahoma State by four strokes at the Southern Hills Country Club in Tulsa, Okla.

UT captured its third consecutive title in 2004 when it defeated Oklahoma by six strokes, also at Prairie Dunes.  Jason Hartwick completed the Texas sweep by taking medalist honors.     Texas has won 42 conference titles dating back to its first Southwest Conference title in 1927.  Texas has claimed 36 individual conference titles, with the first coming from Gib Payne in 1928.

SEASON NOTES
TEXAS OPENS SEASON WITH GOPHER INVITATIONAL WIN
Texas rallied from a four-stroke deficit heading into the final round to tie 36-hole leader LSU for the team tournament title at the 12-team, season-opening Gopher Invitational last September in Wayzata, Minn.    The Longhorns played even-par golf over the final three holes, while LSU played at two-over par over the final three holes, enabling Texas to tie the Tigers in the end. A birdie at the 18th hole from UT sophomore Donald Constable, who was playing on his hometown course, proved to be the difference, as UT shot one-over par at the 18th hole compared to two-over par for LSU.

Texas collected its first tournament victory since the 2008 Morris Williams Intercollegiate at The University of Texas Golf Club. Texas and LSU were named co-champions, but with only one team tournament trophy available, Texas was awarded the trophy by way of its fifth player, sophomore Bobby Hudson, having a lower 54-hole score than LSU's fifth player, Josh Jones. Hudson finished with a 10-over 226 for the tournament, while Jones ended with a 15-over 231.

LONGHORNS ADD SECOND TEAM VICTORY AT TURTLE BAY INTERCOLLEGIATE
UT freshman Dylan Frittelli shot a seven-under 65, and sophomores Donald Constable and Bobby Hudson added two additional sub-70 rounds, as the Longhorns rallied from two strokes down to capture the team championship at the 19-team Turtle Bay Intercollegiate at the Turtle Bay Resort in November.

Texas saved its best for last in the final round, as UT shot a collective 15-under 273, its lowest round of the 54-hole event, to finish with a 21-under 843 for the tournament and defeat second-place San Diego State by three strokes. UNLV placed third at 14-under par. Ohio State's Vaughn Snyder took medalist honors at 11-under par.

Frittelli improved throughout the tournament and chipped in his first sub-70 round of the tournament when his team needed it most. With his seven-under 65 in the final round, Frittelli finished the event tied for sixth place at six-under par.

FRITTELLI CAPTURES PUERTO RICO CLASSIC
Freshman Dylan Frittelli lost the six-stroke individual lead he held after 36 holes but held on to share medalist honors on March 1 at the Puerto Rico Classic at the par 72, 6,902-yard Rio Mar Country Club.   Frittelli became the third current Longhorn to win a collegiate event and the second UT freshman in as many seasons to take medalist honors in a college tournament. With his one-over 73 in the final round, Frittelli finished with a 12-under 204 to share medalist honors with Georgia's Hudson Swafford.

Frittelli opened the tournament with a five-under 67 before dropping an eight-under 64 on in round two to produce the first sub-65 round from a Longhorn golfer since 2001, when David Gossett shot a 63 at the NCAA Championships. The 2007 Toyota World Junior Champion, Frittelli joins teammates Charlie Holland and Bobby Hudson among current Longhorns to win a college tournament.

WHO RETURNS: Texas returns three starters from the 2008 squad that placed 19th at the NCAA Championships and took second at the Big 12 Championships. Junior Charlie Holland returns after earning GCAA third-team All-America honors last season, during which he took medalist honors at the Fresno State Lexus Classic.

UT also returns sophomore Bobby Hudson, who set a course record with a 65 at The University of Texas Golf Club last April en route to medalist honors at the Morris Williams Intercollegiate. Junior Lance Lopez also returns after playing in the last two NCAA Championships for the Longhorns. Sophomore Donald Constable played in four events last season and has earned a start in all eight tournaments this season.

TEXAS TO HOST NCAA MEN’S GOLF REGIONAL
The University of Texas and the UT men’s golf program will host one of six NCAA men’s golf regionals from May 14-16 at The University of Texas Golf Club to decide the field for the NCAA Championships set for May 27-30 in Toledo, Ohio.   The NCAA will announce the fields for the six regionals on May 4.
