Men's Golf takes fourth at Big 12 Championship
HUTCHINSON, Kan. -- University of Texas junior Kevin Schultz fired a three-over 73 on Tuesday to lead the 23rd-ranked Longhorns in the final round of the 2007 Big 12 Men's Golf Championship at the par 70, 6,611-yard Prairie Dunes Golf Club. Texas finished the event in fourth place with a three-day stroke total of 894 to finish at 54-over par, one stroke behind third-place Texas Tech. Oklahoma State took the team title at 26-over par, and the Cowboys' Pablo Martin took medalist honors at one-over par. "We have a lot of respect for Prairie Dunes and our Big 12 competition," said UT coach John Fields. "We had (UT junior) Jace Moore in the last group with (Big 12 medalist) Pablo Martin, and though he did not play well, the experience will raise the level of his game. Kevin Schultz is coming on, and his finish proves just that." Schultz (Richardson, Texas) highlighted the day for Texas with a solid performance on the front nine, during which he eagled the par five, 512-yard seventh hole. Schultz stroked a 36 on the front nine before finishing with a 37 on the back nine to end the round at three-over par. He led Texas by tying for 11th place at 12-over par. Senior Matt Bortis (Springfield, Mo.) equaled Schultz's solid final-round showing with a three-over 73 of his own. Although he did not sink a birdie in round three, Bortis limited his mistakes, shooting par on 15 of 18 holes without any double bogeys. Bortis finished in a tie for 14th place at 13-over par. Junior Jace Moore (Southlake, Texas) dropped a birdie on the 512-yard seventh hole before finishing the round with a nine-over 79. Moore ended the tournament tied for 20th place at 16-over par. Competing in his final Big 12 Championship, senior Jhonattan Vegas (Maturin, Venezuela) tapped in one birdie and shaved a couple of strokes off of his second round, finishing the third round with an eight-over 78. He finished the event tied for 30th place at 19-over par. Freshman Lance Lopez (Missouri City, Texas) opened Tuesday's final round with a birdie on the 432-yard first hole before adding another at the 415-yard 16th hole. He finished with a nine-over 79 in the final round to end the tournament tied for 35th place at 20-over par. Texas will now begin preparation for the NCAA Regional Championships scheduled for May 17-19 at a site to be announced on Monday, May 7. 2007 Big 12 Men's Golf Championship - Prairie Dunes Country Club Texas Individuals
