No. 23 Men's Golf in third place at Big 12 Championship after first two rounds
HUTCHINSON, Kan. -- Texas junior Jace Moore finished the opening two rounds at seven-over par to lead the 23rd-ranked Longhorns Monday on day one of the 2007 Big 12 Men's Golf Championship at the par 70, 6,611-yard Prairie Dunes Country Club. In conditions that became increasingly windy throughout the day, Texas opened with a 13-over 293 in round one and followed with an 18-over 298 in round two to end day one in third place at 31-over par. Sixth-ranked Oklahoma State leads the event at 19-over par, while Texas A&M sits in second at 24-over par. "I'm very happy with the effort today," said UT coach John Fields. "We need one really good score to get into contention on Tuesday, and we will give it our best." Moore (Southlake, Texas) produced a steady opening round Monday and limited his mistakes. Moore countered one double bogey and one bogey on the front nine with a couple of birdies before producing a 35 on the back nine - with one bogey and one birdie - to finish the first round at one-over par. Moore stroked a six-over 76 in round two and sits in a tie for eighth place at seven-over par with one round remaining. Junior Kevin Schultz (Richardson, Texas) sank four birdies to produce a four-over 74 in round one before following with a five-over 75 in round two. Schultz ended the first day tied for 14th place with one round remaining. Senior Matt Bortis (Springfield, Mo.) stroked a seven-over 77 in the first round and tapped in a productive showing in round two to finish strong on day one. Though he did not drop a birdie in round two, Bortis shot par on 15 of 18 holes to finish the round at three-over par. He heads into the final round tied for 19th place at 10-over par. Freshman Lance Lopez's (Missouri City, Texas) opening two rounds resembled those turned in by Bortis, in which he countered a sluggish start with a strong finish. Lopez opened with a 77 in round one but, like Bortis, limited his mistakes in round two, shooting par on 14 of 18 holes. Lopez heads into the final day tied for 23rd place at 11-over par. Senior Jhonattan Vegas (Maturin, Venezuela) sat in a tie for third place after the first round at one-over par before struggling in round two. Vegas carded a 10-over 80 in the second round to finish the day tied for 23rd place at 11-over par. Texas tees off in the final round on Tuesday at 8:50 a.m. Central. 2007 Big 12 Men's Golf Championship - Prairie Dunes Country Club Texas Individuals
