Spieth's first and second round tee times set for Valero Texas Open

SAN ANTONIO, Texas -- Texas freshman Jordan Spieth will be teeing off this week at the PGA TOUR Valero Texas Open (April 19-22) at TPC San Antonio. This marks Spieth’s fifth PGA tournament, as the two-time U.S. Junior Amateur champion and top-ranked collegiate individual previously played in the 2012 Northern Trust Open, 2010 FedEx St. Jude Classic and 2011 and 2010 HP Byron Nelson Championships. Spieth’s playing group for the first two rounds on Thursday and Friday include professionals Erik Compton and Billy Hurley III. The trio is set to tee off of the first hole at 9:10 a.m. Central Thursday and then at 2:10 p.m. off the 10th tee Friday afternoon. Spieth was a contender for first place when entering the final round tied for eighth at the 2011 HP Byron Nelson Championship. After a 7-over-oar final round, he finished tied for 32nd place. At the same event in 2010, Spieth finished tied for 16th. He missed the cut in his two other appearances in a PGA TOUR field. This season, Spieth and the Longhorns have recorded seven victories in 10 team events for Texas’ most wins since the 1982-83 squad achieved the same feat. The 1972-73 Longhorns finished the season with nine wins and the 1971-72 squad ended the year with eight victories. This week’s 156-player field also features two Texas Exes in three-time Valero Texas Open champion Justin Leonard (2000, 2001, 2007) and Bob Estes. Seven major championship winners are in the field this week including Rich Beem (2002 PGA Championship), Ben Curtis (2003 The Open Championship), David Duval (2001 The Open Championship), Retief Goosen (2001, 2004 U.S. Open), Lee Janzen (1993, 1998 U.S. Open), Leonard (1997 The Open Championship) and Shaun Micheel (2003 PGA Championship).
