No. 23 Men's Golf takes 13th place at U.S. Collegiate Championship
ALPHARETTA, Ga. -- No. 23 Texas finished strong in the final round of the United States Collegiate Championship, as the Longhorns carded an 11-over 299 on Wednesday to end the 54-hole event with their top round of the tournament. UT ended at 52-over par to finish in 13th place. Senior Jhonattan Vegas (Maturin, Venezuela) landed the top finish for the Longhorns by tying for 36th place at 12-over par. Vegas opened the tournament on Monday with a four-over 76, followed with a 77 on Tuesday and closed the event on Wednesday with his top round of the tournament, a three-over 75. Senior Matt Bortis (Springfield, Mo.) was one of two Longhorns to shoot a team-best 73 in Wednesday's final round. Bortis shaved nine strokes off of his second-round 82 to finish in a tie for 48th place at 14-over par. Junior Jace Moore (Southlake, Texas) capped his week-long progression to match Bortis with a team-best one-over 73 on the strength of four birdies. After struggling with an 85 in round one, Moore chipped in a two-over 74 in round two before ending with the 73 on Wednesday to end the event tied for 54th place at 16-over par. Senior Farren Keenan (Middlesex, England) shaved one stroke off of his second round to stroke a six-over 78 and end the tournament in a tie for 64th place at 19-over par. Junior Kevin Schultz (Richardson, Texas), who withdrew from Tuesday's second round after completing two holes, stroked an eight-over 80 to conclude the event. Given his withdrawal in the second round, Schultz did not place in the individual standings. Texas now awaits the 2007 Big 12 Golf Championship set for April 23-24 at the Prairie Dunes Country Club in Hutchinson, Kan. U.S. Collegiate Championship T36. Jhonattan Vegas 76-77-75-228 (+12)
