Last Time Out
The University of Texas men's golf team finished in fourth place at the 2006 Morris Williams Invitational at the Austin Country Club. Seniors Matthew Mills (London, England) and Jeff Bell (Plano, Texas) both finished tied for 13th-place to pace the Longhorns.
UT finished the day with a final round of two-over par 290 after rounds of even-par 288 and two-under par 286 on Monday. Texas' total of even-par 864 was one off of third-place BYU's one-under par 863. Oklahoma State won its 11th Morris Williams title with a 14-under par total of 850. Texas Tech was second with a five-under par total of 859.
Mills put together a one-over par final round of 73 with 15 pars, one birdie and two bogeys to tie for 13th place with a total score of even-par 216. On Monday, Mills finished the opening round with a two-under par 70 and in the second round shot a one-over par 73.
Tying with Mills at even-par was Bell who closed the day with a one-under par 71 to go with rounds of four-over 76 and three-under 69 from Monday's 36-hole opener.
Junior Jhonattan Vegas (Maturin, Venezuela) finished the tournament in a tie for 32nd-place after a final round of four-over par 76 to post a total of four-over par 220. Senior Matt Rosenfeld (Plano, Texas) finished in a tie for 47th-place with a total score of seven-over par 223 and rounds of 79, 70 and 74.
Freshman Randy Lowry (Spring, Texas) tied for 36th-place after three rounds. Lowry shot an even-par round of 72 to finish the tournament at five-over par and a final total of 221. Lowry had rounds of even-par 72 and five-over par 77 on Monday.
Two in a Row
The Texas men's golf team has placed among the top four in each of its last two outings. At the Hall of Fame Invitational (March 17-19) the Longhorns finished tied for third with Oklahoma with a final score of 899 (293+300+306, +35) and at the Morris Williams (April 3-4) finished fourth with an even-par 864 (288+286+290). On the year, Texas has placed in the top five four times this season and a different golfer has finished in the top five individually three times. Junior Jhonattan Vegas has finished among the top five twice this year at the Big Island Intercollegiate (Feb. 8-10) and the Hall of Fame Invitational.
