Bortis leads Men's Golf in opening two rounds at National Invitational Tournament

TUCSON, Ariz. -- Texas senior Matt Bortis shot a two-over 74 in the opening round before slicing off five strokes in the second round with a three-under 69 to lead the Longhorns in the opening two rounds Monday in the National Invitational Tournament at the par 72, 7,094-yard OMNI Tucson National Golf Club.

Texas sat in 14th place after shooting a 16-over 304 in the first round, but UT improved tremendously in round two, dropping 21 strokes off its opening round to card a five-under 283 in the second round.

Texas ended the opening two rounds in 12th place at 11-over par. Tulsa leads the 14-team event at 12-under par, and the Golden Hurricane's Ryan Henry is in the lead at eight-under par.

Bortis (Springfield, Mo.) sank three birdies in the first round and added six more in round two without dropping a double bogey in either round. He heads into Tuesday's final round in a tie for 14th place at one-under par.

Senior Jhonattan Vegas (Maturin, Venezuela) fired a four-over 76 in the opening round, and, like Bortis, took five strokes off of his first round in the second round with a one-under 71. He ended the first two rounds in a tie for 41st place at three-over par.

Junior Kevin Schultz (Richardson, Texas) struggled in round one and shot a seven-over 79 but bounced back with a three-under 69 in round two, ending the first two rounds in a tie for 47th place at four-over par. Freshman Lance Lopez (Missouri City, Texas) ended the opening rounds in a tie for 71st place at eight-over par.

Junior Jace Moore (Southlake, Texas) shot an 86 in the opening round but rebounded with a solid, two-over 74 in round two to end the day at 16-over par. He heads into Monday's final round in a tie for 76th place. Texas also sent a squad to the University of Cincinnati Collegiate Invite, where the Longhorns ended the opening round in second place with a four-over 292. Senior Farren Keenan (Middlesex, England) led the way with a three-under 69.

Texas tees off in the final round of the National Invitational Tournament on Tuesday at 9:19 a.m. Central.
