Men's Golf tied for third after second round of National Invitational Tournament

TUCSON, Ariz. -- The Texas men's golf team fired a second-round 12-under-par 276 to move from ninth place into a tie for third place at the National Invitational Tournament (Omni Tucson National Golf Club: Par 72, 7,094 yards) on Monday, March 28. The 276 was the low team score of the day led by senior Shaun Goodwin (Spring, Texas) and junior Matthew Rosenfeld (Plano, Texas), who tallied a pair of five-under-par 67s. The Longhorns are tied with host Arizona at 14-under-par, three strokes behind TCU, which leads at 17-under-par. TCU's J.J. Killeen is the individual leader at nine-under-par.

"We've had a tough stretch of late, but these are the kind of rounds our team is capable of," said Texas head coach John Fields. "The guys kept a good attitude and we are obviously pleased with a day like today. Now, we have to come back and have the same type of day in the final round tomorrow."

After shooting a three-under-par 69 in the first round, Rosenfeld's 67 has him in a tie for second place at eight-under-par. Goodwin shot an even-par 72 on the first day and his 67 moved him from a tie for 34th place to a tie for seventh place at five-under-par.

Freshman Kevin Schultz (Richardson, Texas) also was under par on the day with a one-under-par 71. After finishing the first day at even par, he is now tied for 29th place at one-under-par for the tournament. Sophomore Jhonattan Vegas (Maturin, Venezuela) followed an opening-round 73 with a one-under-par 71 and is tied for 37th place at even par. Junior Jeff Bell (Plano, Texas) carded a four-over-par 76 on Monday and stands at nine-over-par for the tournament.

Final round action will begin at 8 a.m. (Central), when Texas will be grouped with players from Arkansas and TCU. For live scoring, visit TexasSports.com.
