Men's Golf in 10th at Hall of Fame Invitational
HUMBLE, Texas -- The Texas men's golf team shot a 10-over-par 298 on the first day of the Hall of Fame Invitational (Redstone Golf Club: Par 72, 7,508 yards) and stand in 10th place heading into the second round. Junior Matthew Rosenfeld (Plano, Texas) was the low Longhorn with an even-par 72 and is tied for 12th place. TCU currently holds the lead at three-under-par (285), while Wake Forest's Kyle Reifers fired a six-under-par 66 and holds a three-stroke lead over New Mexico's Charlie Beljan after 18 holes. "We could have played better today, but it definitely could have been worse," said Texas head coach John Fields. "We finished with two pretty difficult holes and we didn't manage them as well as we could have. It is going to take some time, but things are going to come together." Sophomore Jhonattan Vegas (Maturin, Venezuela) opened with a double bogey on number two and a triple bogey on number seven (Vegas' sixth hole), but battled to shoot a two-over-par 74 on the day. He stands in a tie for 28th place after the first day. After not competing at the Southern Highlands Collegiate Championship last weekend, junior Jeff Bell (Plano, Texas) returned to card a three-over-par 75 and is tied for 38th place. Freshman Kevin Schultz (Richardson, Texas) shot a five-over-par 77, while classmate Jace Moore (Southlake, Texas) finished with a six-over-par 78. The Longhorns have four golfers playing as individuals this weekend. Senior Shaun Goodwin (Spring, Texas) led that group with a four-over-par 76. Playing in his first tournament as a Longhorn, freshman Hector Diaz-Ceballos (Morelos, Mexico) shot a six-over-par 78 and is tied for 71st place. Junior Matthew Mills (London, England) finished with a seven-over-par 79, while sophomore Farren Keenan (Middlesex, England) posted an eight-over-par 80. Second-round action will begin at 7:30 a.m. (Central), when Texas golfers will be grouped with players from Vanderbilt, Kentucky and Houston.
