Keenan sits in tie for first after first day of Puerto Rico Classic

RIO GRANDE, Puerto Rico -- Junior Farren Keenan (Middlesex, England) shot a first round four-under par 68 to pace The University of Texas to a fifth-place finish after the first day of the Puerto Rico Classic in Rio Grande, Puerto Rico on Sunday.

The University of Alabama is in the lead after the first round with an eight-under par 280, Georgia is in second with a seven-under par 281, the Florida Gators are in third with a four-under par 284, followed by Arizona State in fourth with a three-under par 285.

Keenan sits in a five-way tie for first-place after nines of 32 and 36 for his opening round of 68. It is his best opening round of the season and nearly seven strokes below his opening round average of 74.5.

Fellow senior Jeff Bell (Plano, Texas) was next on the team for Texas with a opening round of two-under par 70 after nines of 36 and 34, one stroke from his season-low opening round of 69. Bell is now averaging 71.8 in five opening rounds this season.

Senior Matthew Mills (London, England) is third on the team with a opening-round of even-par 72 and a tie for 25th, junior Jhonattan Vegas (Maturin, Venezuela) is in a tie for 56th-place with a four-over par 76 and senior Matthew Rosenfeld (Plano, Texas) finishes up the team with a five-over par round of 77.

The team will return to the links to play their second 18 on Monday Feb. 27 at 7 a.m. and the final round will start at 7 a.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 28.
