NEXT UP: No. 14 Texas resumes competition this weekend at the Puerto Rico Classic. WHERE: Rio Mar Country Club – Rio Grande, Puerto Rico WHEN: Sunday, Feb. 21 through Tuesday, Feb. 23. The tournament field will play 18 holes each day. Tee times for Sunday are set for 8 a.m. local time (6 a.m. Central). LAST TIME OUT: Junior Bobby Hudson registered his second career college victory earlier this month at the 22-team Mauna Lani Invitational, where the Horns took fourth place. Cody Gribble (Fr. – Dallas, Texas) •ranks second on the team with a 72.31 stroke average in 13 rounds this season •tied for third in his first college event, last fall’s Olympia Fields Invitational •placed second at the Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate Dylan Frittelli (So. - Pretoria, South Africa) LAST SEASON: Texas registered six top-five finishes, including two victories, in 12 events played during the 2008-09 season. The Longhorns opened last season by sharing the team championship with LSU at the 2008 Gopher Invitational in Wayzata, Minn. UT added a victory at the 19-team Turtle Bay Collegiate Invitational last fall in Kahuku, Hawaii. Texas placed eighth at the Big 12 Championships last spring before taking third at the NCAA Austin Regional Championship at The University of Texas Golf Club to qualify for the NCAA Championships. Texas placed 26th in the 30-team field at the NCAA Championships. WHO RETURNS: Texas returns four student-athletes who started all 12 events last season, and another, senior Lance Lopez, who competed in 11 of 12 events. Lopez earned honorable mention All-America honors from the Golf Coaches’ Association of America (GCAA) last season after winning the NCAA Austin Regional Championship. Senior Charlie Holland enjoyed a productive summer that culminated with a semifinals appearance at the U.S. Amateur Championship last month in Tulsa, Okla. Junior Bobby Hudson (Memphis, Tenn.) started all 12 events last season and contributed one top-10 individual finish. Sophomores Adam Wennerstrom (Austin, Texas), Steffan Schmieding (Austin, Texas), Brett Spencer (Plano, Texas) and redshirt freshman Julio Vegas (Maturin, Venezuela) are joined by true freshmen Cody Gribble (Dallas, Texas) and Johnathan Schnitzer (Houston, Texas). |
