Men's Golf preview: Puerto Rico Classic 

UP NEXT: Texas (No. 1 Golfweek/Sagarin, No. 1 Golf World/Nike Golf men's coaches' poll) travels to Rio Grande, Puerto Rico, for the Puerto Rico Classic (hosted by Purdue).   

WHERE: Rio Mar’s River Course – Rio Grande, Puerto Rico 

WHEN: Sunday, Feb. 19 - Tuesday, Feb. 21 

TEE TIMES: Sunday’s first round will be a shotgun start beginning at 6 a.m. Central. The Longhorns are slated to tee off of the first four holes alongside host Purdue and Georgia Tech.

THE TOURNAMENT FIELD: Alabama, Clemson, East Tennessee State, Georgia, Georgia Tech, Michigan, North Carolina, North Carolina State, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Purdue, TEXAS, UNCG, Virginia Tech.

TEXAS GOLFERS TOP INDIVIDUAL RANKINGS: Senior Dylan Frittelli is ranked second in the country according to the most recent Golfweek/Sangarin rankings while junior Julio Vegas checks in at No. 25. Freshman Jordan Spieth tops the rankings but will miss this week’s tournament after participating in the PGA TOUR Northern Trust Open.

DRIVE FOR FIVE: Texas has won its last four tournaments by an average margin of 16.75 strokes.

LAST TIME OUT: The No. 1 Texas Men's Golf team rolled to its fourth-consecutive win at the Amer Ari Invitational in wire-to-wire fashion after carding a final-round 11-under-par 277 to best the 20-team field at Waikoloa Kings' Course. UT topped runner-up Southern California (276-285-278=839) by five strokes and placed three Longhorns in the top 10 on the individual leaderboard. 


 

 

LAST YEAR AT THE PUERTO RICO CLASSIC: No. 6 Texas shot a collective 2-over 290 in the final round and went on to place seventh in the 15-team Puerto Rico Classic Tuesday.  Alabama claimed the team title at 28-under, and Georgia Tech took second at 23-under.  Oklahoma State placed third at 17-under par, and Georgia took fourth at 6-under par.  Georgia Tech's James White claimed the team title at 10-under par.

-70.02 scoring average ranks second for Texas 

No. 2 Julio Vegas 
-25th-ranked men's collegiate individual per Golfweek/Sagarin
-Two top 10 finishes last fall at the Jack Nicklaus Invitational (8th) and Isleworth Collegiate Invitational (T-6th)
-Also finished tied for 11th at both the OFCC/Fighting Illini Invitational and Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate 

No. 3 Toni Hakula 
-Made his first top 10 finish of the year at the Amer Ari Invitational (T-9th)
-Finished top 25 in all three fall appearances 

No. 4 Cody Gribble 
-Fifth start of the season
-Finished in fifth place at the Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate at 1-under 209 

No. 5 Kramer Hickok
-Third collegiate start at Texas
-Carded a season-low 73 in the final round of the Amer Ari Invitational
