WAIKOLOA, Hawaii -- The fifth-ranked Texas men's golf team shot a final round 273 (-15) on Friday, Feb. 11 to finish in 10th place (287-273-272=832, -32) at the Taylor Made/Waikoloa Intercollegiate. Freshman Jace Moore (Southlake, Texas) tied for 24th at nine-under-par (73-66-68=207) to lead the Longhorns. Oklahoma State won the tournament with a three-round 801 (-63), while the Cowboys' Tyler Leon took medalist honors at 21-under-par.
"We played better over the last two rounds, but we didn't take advantage of the scoring opportunities on the par fives," said Texas head coach John Fields. "We got great scores from different individuals over the three rounds, but we couldn't put it together as a team. We aren't satisfied and we expect to play better when we go to Las Vegas in March."
Moore shot a four-under-par 68 on Friday to move up from 31st place to 24th. Junior Matthew Mills (London, England) fired a six-under 66 in the final round to move into a tie for 37th place at seven-under-par (72-71-66=209).
Juniors Matthew Rosenfeld (Plano, Texas) and Jeff Bell (Plano, Texas) finished the tournament in a tie for 42nd place at six-under-par. Rosenfeld carded a two-under-par 70 in the final round, while Bell tallied his second-consecutive round in the 60s with a 68 on Friday.
Senior Shaun Goodwin (Spring, Texas) ended up at even-par (71-73-72=216) for the tournament after shooting a 72 in the final round. The 216 left Goodwin in a tie for 80th place.
Freshman Kevin Schultz (Richardson, Texas), playing as an individual, finished in a tie for 54th place at four-under-par (69-70-73=212), while sophomore Farren Keenan (Middlesex, England) shot a final-round 75 (+3) to finish in a tie for 104th at six-over-par.
The Longhorns will spend the next month preparing for the UNLV Rebel Classic, which is being held at the Southern Highland Golf Club in Las Vegas, Nev. from March 11-13.
