Men's Golf preview: Hilo Intercollegiate
Site: Hilo Intercollegiate (Kona,Hawaii) Texas Lineup: Ranking (Team): Ranking (Individual): Last Year's Tournament: Texas did not compete in the 2005 Big Island Intercollegiate Last Time Out: Matt Mills finished a career best at the PING/Arizona Intercollegiate after a three-way tie had to be decided by four playoff holes following the final round of the tournament at Arizona National in Tucson, Arizona. At the conclusion of the third round, Mills sat in the three-way tie for the lead with Alejandro Canizares of Arizona State, ranked No. 32 by Golfweek and Henry Liaw of Arizona. All three recorded a par on the first playoff hole but on the second hole Liaw and Canizares notched birdies to Mills' par. Liaw would eventually win with an eagle on the fourth playoff hole. As a team, Texas finished eighth with a three round total of 863 (+11). BYU took first with a score of 834 (-18), followed by Arizona State and host Arizona tied for second with 843 (-9). New Mexico took fourth with a score of 848 (-4) and Pepperdine and Tulsa rounded out the top five with a tie for fifth and a score of 850 (-2). In the second round, Texas posted a season-low score of 275 after Mills shot a career-low round of 65 (-6) and Jeff Bell turned in a four-under 67. Bell opened with rounds of 69 (-2) and the season low 67, but finished the final day with a six-over par 77 to tie for 16th place with a total of 213, his lowest finish of the season. Mills third place finish is the lowest of his career and he has finished in the top-five of two tournaments so far this season. He also placed fifth at the Inverness Intercollegiate on Sept. 19-20. He finished the tournament with three par or better rounds, 71-65-68, for his career-low three round score of 208 (-9).
