LOS ANGELES -- Texas Men's Golf freshman Jordan Spieth has received a sponsor exemption in the PGA TOUR's Northern Trust Open slated for Feb. 16-19 at Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades, Calif.
The No. 2-ranked collegiate player in the United States (Golfweek/Sagarin College Rankings), Spieth has past PGA TOUR event experience after having finished T-16th and T-32nd in 2010 and 2011, respectively, at the HP Byron Nelson Championship. He missed the cut at the 2010 FedEx St. Jude Classic, his only other start on the PGA TOUR.
Spieth's appearance in two weeks will mark an NCAA preview of sorts, as the NCAA Championship will be held May 29-June 3 at Riviera.
Spieth was one of eight players who received an invitation into the event. Two-time Riviera champ Fred Couples also received an exemption, along with UCLA's Patrick Cantlay, K.T. Kim, Ryo Ishikawa, Yuta Ikeda, Billy Hurley III and Erik Compton.
