Lopez places 28th at Western Refining College All-America Golf Classic

Nov. 24, 2009

EL PASO, Texas -- Texas senior Lance Lopez carded a 1-over 72 and finished in 28th place Tuesday, as the 34th annual Western Refining College All-America Golf Classic concluded at the par 71, 6,842-yard El Paso Country Club.  Alabama's Hunter Hamrick and Oklahoma State's Morgan Hoffmann tied for the 54-hole tournament title at 11-under par.

After shooting rounds of 71 and 77 on Monday, Lopez (Missouri City, Texas) opened the third round at No. 10 and carded bogeys in three of his first four holes.  However, Lopez played error-free golf the rest of the way.  He sank birdies at No. 16, a par-four at 378 yards, and at No. 5, a par-four at 397 yards to finish the round with his 1-over 72.    Lopez placed 28th at 7-over par after beginning the day in 30th place.

The Western Refining College All-America Golf Classic is an invitation-only event featuring 32 All-Americans from last season, and unlike most college tournaments, no team champion is crowned.  Each university represented in the tournament was awarded a $1,000 scholarship.  Texas' Randy Simmons won the tournament's second installment in 1975.
