Oct. 23, 2012
WINDERMERE, Fla. -- Sophomore All-American Jordan Spieth notched a Texas-best fifth-place finish at the Isleworth Collegiate Invitational Tuesday afternoon with a 54-hole total of even-par 216 (68-74-74). The Longhorns finished fourth in their title defense at Windermere Country Club with a 15-over 879 (288-295-296). In three events, Spieth has now recorded a team-high pair of top-five finishes, including a tie for second at the season-opening Carpet Capital Collegiate. Junior Toni Hakula paced UT in the final round with a +1 scorecard. After taking a double bogey on the second hole, Hakula endured a pair of bogeys on the fourth and sixth hole to climb to 4-over. He sank his first of five birdies at seven, but suffered a subsequent bogey on the next hole and made the turn at +4. A trio of subpars at 10, 13 and 14 shaved three strokes off Hakula’s round before he made a final bogey on 15. Hakula birdied his 54th hole to finish the back nine of Isleworth at 3-under. Hakula tied for 33rd place overall at 9-over 225 (75-77-73). Spieth and freshman Brandon Stone carded final-round 74s. Stone (76-71-74) finished tied for 21st at 5-over 221. Seniors Cody Gribble (69-76-75=220) and Julio Vegas (76-74-78=228) rounded out the Texas squad in ties for 16th and 44th places, respectively. Top-ranked California (284-295-289=868) claimed a wire-to-wire victory, while New Mexico (293-291-286=870) and Alabama (296-292-285=873) took second and third places. The Bears’ Michael Kim (67-72-73=212, -4) earned medalist honors. Texas returns to action Oct. 28-29 in the Stanford Classic at Cypress Point Club.
