Oct. 22, 2012
WINDERMERE, Fla. -- Freshman Brandon Stone carded a 1-under-par 71 in Monday’s second round of the Isleworth Collegiate Invitational to pace the No. 2 Texas Men’s Golf team. Stone climbed 28 places on the individual leaderboard and is now tied for 17th place at 3-over 147 (76-71) after beginning the day tied for 45th. As a team, the Longhorns are tied for third at 7-over 583 in the talent-laden 15-team field at Windermere Country Club. Texas is the defending team champion at the event, and sophomore All-American Jordan Spieth is the reigning medalist. Stone sank a team-high five birdies (one, five, seven, 13, 14) to counteract a quartet of bogeys (two, four, 12, 15). He was the only player on the squad to play Windermere’s back nine at even-par. Spieth (68-74=142, -2) remains tied for second place after a second-round 74. He was even through 14 holes, but a double bogey on the par-3, 15th hole set cost him two strokes off his round. Senior Cody Gribble (69-76) also maintained his position in the top-10 with a second-round 76 for a 36-hole total of 145. Senior Julio Vegas (76-74=150) and junior Toni Hakula (75-77=152) round out the Texas squad in ties for 35th and 46th places, respectively. Top-ranked California (284-295=579) maintained its first-round lead in the team standings while Illinois (291-291=582) climbed to second. Florida (297-286) joined Texas in third at 7-over 583. The Bears’ Michael Kim (67-72=139) holds a three-stroke lead over all individuals. UT will play alongside Cal and Illinois in Tuesday’s final round beginning at 8:40 a.m. Central off the first tee.
