No. 2 Men's Golf finishes third at PING/Golfweek Preview

ALPHARETTA, Ga. -- The No. 2 Texas Men’s Golf team carded an even-par 280 in Tuesday’s final round of the PING/Golfweek Preview to finish tied for third in an event that featured a field of 15 prospective title contenders for the 2013 NCAA Championship. Freshman Brandon Stone and senior Julio Vegas led the Longhorns (290-283-280=853) on the individual leaderboard with ties for 16th place at 3-over 213 in the second event of the fall season. 

Stone’s final-round 69 was a tournament best for the Longhorns. After beginning with six consecutive pars, Stone (74-70-69) found red numbers with a birdie on seven, but made the turn at even after a bogey on nine. Additional birdies came at 12 and 16, and his second blemish of the round occurred on the par-3 No. 15.

Vegas (71-72-70) and senior Cody Gribble (73-74-70=217, +7) turned in even-par 70s Tuesday afternoon, with each player balancing four subpars to as many bogeys in their final rounds at Capital City Club’s Crabapple Course. Junior Toni Hakula (74-70-71=215) finished tied for 26th place, while Gribble and sophomore Jordan Spieth (72-71-74=217) tied for 35th to round out the defending national champions.

Host Georgia Tech (287-282-276) and California tied for first on the team leaderboard at 5-over 845. UNLV (281-286-286) matched Texas’ 13-over 853 for a share of third place.

The Longhorns will returns to the links Oct. 21-31 as the defending champions at the Isleworth Collegiate Invitational in Windermere, Fla.
