Hakula and Stone lead No. 2 Men's Golf in second-round action at PING/Golfweek Preview

Sept. 24, 2012

ALPHARETTA, Ga. -- Senior Toni Hakula and freshman Brandon Stone carded rounds of even-par 70 in Monday’s second round of the PING/Golfweek Preview to lead the No. 2 Texas Men’s Golf team at Capital City Club. As a team, the Longhorns climbed from a 10th-place tie to seventh place with a team score of 3-over 283.

Beginning his round on the 10th tee of the Crabapple Course of CCC – site of the 2013 NCAA Men’s Golf Championship – Stone (74-70=144) carded a team-high five birdies (11, 14, 17, five, six). With only two bogeys through 16 holes, Stone was on pace for Texas’ first subpar round of the tournament before a double bogey on eight and a final bogey on nine pushed him back to even.

Hakula (74-70=144) found a pair of early birdies on 12 and 14, but a three-hole stretch of double-bogey-bogey on holes 15, 16 and 17 increased his total to +2. Hakula birdied the first and fifth holes after the turn for an even-par round.

Stone and Hakula are tied for 29th place through 36 holes of action. Sophomore All-American Jordan Spieth (72-71) and senior Julio Vegas (71-72) are tied for 20th place at 3-over 143, while senior Cody Gribble (73-74=147) rounds out the squad in a tie for 46th.

UCLA (282-284=566) holds a one-stroke lead over second-place UNLV (281-286=567) on the team leaderboard. Host Georgia Tech (287-282) and California (289-280) are tied for second at 9-over 569.

The Longhorns are set to conclude the 54-hole tourney Tuesday morning at 9:30 a.m. Central off the first tee alongside Texas A&M and San Diego State.
