No. 2 Men's Golf surges atop Carpet Capital Collegiate leaderboard with 22-under 266
Sept. 8, 2012
ROCKY FACE, Ga. -- The No. 2 Texas Men's Golf team fired a blistering 22-under-par 266 to surge to the top of the Carpet Capital Collegiate leaderboard in Saturday's second round at The Farm Golf Club. Freshman Brandon Stone carded a 9-under 63 in just his second collegiate round - matching the best single-round score (in relation to par) in Texas history since David Gossett accomplished the same feat in the first round of the 2000 NCAA Championship - and sits atop the individual leaderboard after 36 holes. Texas' 266 is the lowest single-round team score in the John Fields era. Under Fields, the Longhorns' previous bests were a pair of 269s in the second round of the 2010 Puerto Rico Classic and third round of the 2007 Turtle Bay Resort Invitational. Stone's pristine scorecard was littered with nine birdies, including seven over his final 10 holes. Through two rounds, Stone has recorded 14 total subpars and just two bogeys. Additionally, his 36-hole 12-under 132 total is the lowest by a Texas player since senior Cody Gribble did the same in the 2010 Puerto Rico Classic. Sophomore All-American Jordan Spieth shot a 6-under 66 and is in third place at 8-under 136 (70-68). Spieth recorded the first eagle of his sophomore season and fourth of his collegiate career on the par-5 12th hole, his third of the day. He added seven birdies (10, 13, one, five, six, seven, nine) to counter three bogeys (14, 17, four) for his 17th overall round in the 60s. Sophomore Kramer Hickok also eagled 12 en route to a career-best 5-under 67 and Texas' third second-round scorecard in the 60s. Hickok is tied for 19th place at even-par 144 (77-67).
Redshirt junior Johnathan Schnitzer (78-70=148) and senior Julio Vegas (77-72=149) round out the UT contingent in ties for 42nd and 45th places, respectively. The Longhorns entered Saturday's round tied for 11th place in the 15-team field after a first-round 293 (+5). Georgia is in second place at 562 while LSU, Alabama and Clemson are in a three-way tie for third at 573. Texas is set to begin Sunday's final round at 9:30 a.m. Central off the first tee alongside Alabama and Auburn.
