TANAGURA, Japan -- Paced by a two-under 70 from junior Chris Causey, No. 23 Texas shot a collective two-over 290 in the opening round of The Topy Cup, a 10-team, 60-player event featuring four American college teams and six Japanese college teams.
Texas carded the low round among the American college teams on Tuesday and sits in second place after the opening round. Tohoku Fukushi University holds the top spot after carding a four-under 284, and Colorado State sits in third at three-over par.
No. 2 Washington sits in fifth at eight-over par, and Michigan State sits in seventh place at 19-over par. Tohoku Fukushi's Yoshinori Fujimoto holds the individual lead after carding a six-under 66.
In just his third varsity start, Causey (The Woodlands, Texas) got off to a slow start on the front nine before playing spotless golf on the last 11 holes. Causey birdied the ninth hole to make the turn with a 38 before shooting a 32 on the back nine behind birdies at the 10th, 13th, 14th and 15th holes.
