Stone leads Men's Golf in first-round action at Carpet Capital Collegiate

ROCKY FACE, Ga. - Freshman Brandon Stone fired a 3-under-par 69 in his collegiate debut in Friday's opening round of the Carpet Capital Collegiate at The Farm Golf Club. Stone, ranked No. 30 according to the most recent World Amateur Golf Rankings, is tied for fifth place and trails the first-round leader by just two strokes.
Stone dropped his score to 3-under through six holes with birdies at two, three and six. Following a stretch of five pars, he found another pair of red numbers on 12 and 13. Stone gave back two strokes with bogeys on 16 and 18 to finish at -3.
Sophomore All-American Jordan Spieth began his season with a 2-under 70 that included four birdies (one, four, six, 12) and two bogeys (seven, eight). Spieth enters Saturday's second round tied for eighth place.
Senior Julio Vegas and sophomore Kramer Hickok are tied for 58th place at 5-over 77. Redshirt junior Johnathan Schnitzer is one stroke back and tied for 63rd.
Georgia holds a six-stroke lead at 10-under 278. National runner-up Alabama is in second place at 4-under 284 and LSU (286, -2) is third.
As a team, the Longhorns are tied for 11th place at 5-over 293.
Texas is scheduled to begin Saturday's second round off the 10th tee at 9:12 a.m. Central alongside Clemson and Kennesaw State.
