Frittelli, Hakula pace Men's Golf in round two at NCAA Championships

STILLWATER, Okla. – Texas junior Dylan Frittelli and freshman Toni Hakula each shot a 1-over 73 to lead the Longhorns Wednesday in round two of the 2011 NCAA Championships at Oklahoma State’s Karsten Creek Golf Club. Texas shot a 13-over 301 in Wednesday’s second round and ended the day tied for 19th place at 24-over par for the tournament. Georgia Tech leads the event at 3-under par, and UCLA sits in second at 2-under par. Illinois holds third place at 2-over par, and Georgia is in fourth place at 3-over par. Alabama rounds out the top-five at 4-over par. Individually, LSU’s John Peterson leads at 5-under par and holds a one-shot lead over Georgia Tech’s James White. The top-eight teams after Thursday’s third and final round of stroke play will advance to the match-play rounds on Friday. The national champion will be crowned on Sunday, June 5 when the match pitting the final two teams is decided. The NCAA individual champion will be crowned on Thursday pending the conclusion of the final stroke-play round. Starting from the 10th tee, Frittelli (Pretoria, South Africa) played a spotless opening nine holes highlighted by birdies at the 14th and 18th holes. Frittelli took a 1-over 73 into the clubhouse and ended the day tied for 46th place at 4-over par. Hakula (Espoo, Finland) matched his 73 from the opening round and endured a roller coaster round that featured only four par scores. The 2011 Big 12 Conference Newcomer of the Year eagled the 14th hole, a par-five, and scattered birdies at the 12th, 15th, 18th, first, fifth and ninth holes. At two-over par for the tournament, Hakula is UT’s low scorer heading into the final round of stroke play. He sits in a tie for 28th place.
Sophomore Cody Gribble (Dallas, Texas) carded a triple bogey on his first hole but maintained a solid round the rest of the way, as sank a birdie at the sixth hole and finished with a 5-over 77 on the day. Gribble is tied for 79th place heading into round three. Sophomore Julio Vegas (Maturin, Venezuela) carded birdies at the 16th and eighth holes and finished with a 6-over 78 in round two. Vegas is tied for 93rd place heading into round three. Senior Bobby Hudson (Memphis, Tenn.) matched Vegas’ six-over 78 and sank one birdie on the round at the fourth hole. Hudson is tied for 105th place with one round remaining. It was coming out of the southeast, which in some cases made a few of the par-fours little stronger.
