Hakula (Espoo, Finland), competing in his first career round at the NCAA Championships, put together a 1-over 73 highlighted by a one-under par effort on the back nine. Hakula sank consecutive birdies at the 13th, 14th and 15th holes and finished the day tied for 34th place. Junior Dylan Frittelli (Pretoria, South Africa) sank birdies at the fourth and sixth holes and carded a 3-over 75 in round one. Frittelli is tied for 64th place heading into round two.

Sophomore Cody Gribble (Dallas, Texas) scattered birdies at the first, sixth, 11th and 13th holes en route to a 3-over 75. Gribble joins Frittelli in a tie for 64th place. Sophomore Julio Vegas (Maturin, Venezuela) birdied the 17th and 18th holes and finished with a 4-over 76 for the round. Vegas is tied for 75th place. Senior Bobby Hudson (Memphis, Tenn.) birdied the first and last holes of the day and ended the round with a 5-over 77. Hudson is tied for 90th place heading into round two.

Texas tees off in the second of three stroke-play rounds on Wednesday at 8:10 a.m. Central.

POST-ROUND COMMENTS
Texas head coach John Fields
On the Horns' opening round

"We could have closed a little bit better today. It took a lot of patience to get through the round. We left some shots out there, but all things being equal, we have two more days to play very good golf. I know we prepared well, so I know these guys will want to come and get after it tomorrow."

On Toni Hakula's round
"He's a good player. He has played courses like this many times, whether it was at the British Amateur or the World Amateur, whatever the case may be. I don't expect him to fail under this pressure, and in fact, I think he enjoys it. He got us started today."

On how the course set-up differs from last fall's PING Preview at Karsten Creek
"This is set up like a major championship. The rough is five to six inches thick in some areas. If you hit a poor tee ball, you are going to pay. If you hit a poor second shot, you are going to pay. It's definitely a challenge, no question."
