No. 6 Men's Golf shares team title at NCAA East Regional Championship
May 22, 2010 NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- No. 6 Texas shot an even-par 280 and finished in a tie for first place to secure one of five NCAA Championships team berths available Saturday at the NCAA East Regional Championship at The Course at Yale (par 70, 6,749 yards). The Longhorns entered the final round tied for first with Kent State and went on to finish in the same position alongside the Golden Flashes. Texas and Kent State tied for first at 5-under par for the tournament, as UT nailed down its second win of the season after claiming the Puerto Rico Classic in February. Texas collects its fourth team title at a NCAA regional event and its first since 2000. Top-seeded UCLA qualified third at 4-under par, and Penn State secured the fourth qualifying spot at 3-under par. Virginia claimed the final NCAA Championships berth available from the East Regional by taking fifth at 3-over par. East Tennessee State’s Rhys Enoch advances to the NCAA Championships as the low-scoring individual not on one of the advancing teams. The NCAA Championships will be contested June 1-6 in Chattanooga, Tenn. Freshman Cody Gribble carded his second sub-70 round of the tournament Saturday as he fired a 1-under 69. Gribble birdied the second and seventh holes and bogeyed only one hole on the day, as he finished in third place overall at 6-under par. Gribble (Dallas, Texas) finished just one shot behind tournament co-medalists T.J. Howe of Penn State and Enoch of East Tennessee State. It marks Gribble’s fifth top-three finish in 12 starts this season. Senior Lance Lopez carded a 2-over 72 in Saturday’s final round. Lopez (Missouri City, Texas) tied for eighth place overall at 2-under par for the tournament. Junior Bobby Hudson led the Horns on Saturday with a 2-under 68. Hudson (Memphis, Tenn.) made the turn with a 36 but made consecutive birdies at holes 13 through 15 before adding another at No. 17. Hudson tied for 16th place at 1-under par. Sophomore Dylan Frittelli (Pretoria, South Africa) shot a 2-over 72 in the final round and tied for 41st place at 5-over par. Senior Charlie Holland carded a 1-over 71 in the final round and tied for 58th place at 12-over par. 2010 NCAA East Regional Championship POST-ROUND COMMENTS On Cody Gribble and Bobby Hudson: I’m really proud of Cody and his efforts this week. His consistently good attitude and character have added a lot to this team. He did what he intended to do, in terms of contending for the individual title. Though he is disappointed he did not win today, he could not be happier for our team. Bobby Hudson was super-solid today. He turned it around and made four birdies down the stretch. That was huge for this golf team and it put us right back in the hunt.
