April 19, 2009
PALO ALTO, Calif. -- Led by a two-over 72 from sophomore Bobby Hudson, Texas shot a 27-over 297 in Sunday's final round, as the Longhorns placed 12th in the 17-team U.S. Intercollegiate at the par 70, 6,742-yard Stanford University Golf Course.
Collectively, Texas finished with a 15-over 855 for the tournament, while Washington captured the team title by 15 strokes over runner-up USC with a 36-under 804. The Huskies' Nick Taylor took medalist honors at 12-under par.
"The reason I put the Stanford tournament on our schedule before the Big 12 Championship was to get the team to play on bent-grass greens and bluegrass rough," UT coach John Fields said. "It took its toll on our team, but it should pay dividends at Prairie Dunes (site of the Big 12 Championship)."
After shooting two rounds of 68 on Saturday, sophomore Donald Constable shot a four-over 74 on Sunday and landed UT's top individual finish by tying for 26th place at even-par for the tournament. After starting the final round at the fifth hole, Constable (Wayzata, Minn.) worked his way around the course and produced an eagle at hole No. 1, a par-five with a 526-yard layout.
Junior Lance Lopez (Missouri City, Texas) sank two birdies in the final round and finished with a seven-over 77 to end the tournament tied for 45th place at four-over par. Freshman Dylan Frittelli (Pretoria, South Africa) added three birdies in the final round and finished with a four-over 74. Frittelli tied for 50th overall at five-over par.
Hudson (Memphis, Tenn.) fired his third two-over 72 in as many rounds to tie for 52nd overall at six-over par. Junior Charlie Holland (Dallas, Texas) carded a seven-over 77 in round three and placed 78th at 17-over par.
"I was very pleased with Donald (Constable) and Lance (Lopez) this week," Fields added. "They had three rounds in the 60's between them, and that is what we will need to compete in the postseason."
Texas begins play at the Big 12 Championship, a 72-hole event, on Monday, April 27 at the Prairie Dunes Country Club in Hutchinson, Kan.
