March 17, 2013
STATESBORO, Ga. -- Texas freshman Brandon Stone collected his fourth top-five finish of the season and senior Cody Gribble landed his second at the Schenkel Invitational Sunday afternoon at Forest Heights Country Club. Stone (68-73-69) finished second overall at 3-under-par 207, three strokes behind medalist Justin Thomas (67-70-70) of Alabama, and Gribble (73-68-71) tied for fifth with a 54-hole total of 212.
As a team, Texas (280-285-293=584, -6) entered Sunday’s final round two strokes behind eventual winner Alabama (282-281-285=848), but was unable to overcome four par-or-better scores by the Crimson Tide.
Stone’s team-best round of 69 included one eagle - his team-leading third of the season - five birdies and four bogeys. He overcame a bogey-bogey start with a pair of birdies on the fourth and fifth holes and dipped to 2-under with his eagle on the seventh hole. Three birdies and two bogeys over the final nine holes put Stone in the clubhouse at 3-under through the weekend.
Gribble’s final round 71 was the result of five birdies and four bogeys.
Junior Toni Hakula (71-72-76=219) finished tied for 16th, his second top 20 of the year. Sophomore Kramer Hickok (68-77-77=222) and senior Julio Vegas (78-72-81=231) rounded out the Texas contingent in ties for 30th and 70th places, respectively.
The Longhorns return to action the first weekend of April at the Augusta State Invitational.
