Men's Golf's Holland wins Fresno State Lexus Classic
FRESNO, Calif. -- Texas sophomore Charlie Holland shot a three-under 69 in the final round and defeated San Diego State's Matt Hoffenberg on the third playoff hole to win the 103-player Fresno State Lexus Classic Tuesday at the par 72, 6,729-yard Fort Washington Country Club. Holland wins the 54-hole event with a nine-under 207 to become Texas' first medalist since the 2006 season, when Matt Rosenfeld won the Big 12 Championship. Holland's fourth top-three finish of the season helped the Longhorns to a tie for second at the 20-team event, as UT finished with a three-day total of 844 strokes to finish at 20-under for the tournament. San Diego State won the event at 23-under par, and California tied for second alongside Texas at 20-under par. "We're really proud of Charlie, and he has been so solid for us this year," UT coach John Fields said. "It was a big goal for him to come out and win this tournament, and he wanted to come out and really help this team. He showed great leadership throughout all three rounds." Texas landed three Longhorns among the top five finishers, as sophomore Lance Lopez took third with a seven-under 209, and redshirt freshman Bobby Hudson tied for fourth with a six-under 210. Lopez stroked a one-under 71 in the final round, and Hudson shot an even-par 72 in round three. The Fresno State Lexus Classic marked the first event since last September's Texas Cup that UT placed two or more players in the final top five. Freshman Donald Constable carded a two-over 74 in round three and tied for 43rd place with a two-over 218. Senior Jace Moore also shot a 74 in the final round and tied for 57th place with a four-over 220. "It was really great for us to finish where we did, and the 286 today was solid," Fields added.
