McCarthy, No. 2 Men's Golf maintain lead at Bayou City Collegiate Championship

HUMBLE, Texas -- Texas junior walk-on Brax McCarthy (67-69) built a two-stroke lead Saturday afternoon and is 8-under through 36 holes at the Bayou City Collegiate Championship while playing as an individual. As a team, the Longhorns (285-274=559, -17) fired a field-best 14-under 274 and hold a 13-stroke lead entering Sunday's final round. Senior Julio Vegas and junior Toni Hakula made up some ground on moving day, as the duo moved into second and third places, respectively. Vegas (69-69) leads Texas' scoring contingent at 6-under 138, while Hakula (72-67=139) is one stroke back. Beginning his round on the 10th tee, McCarthy found birdies on the 12th and 18th holes and made the turn at 1-under after bogeying No. 15. He made three consecutive pars on the front nine before sinking a birdie putt at No. 4 to dip to -2. Two more pars ensued before a bogey-birdie-birdie finish put McCarthy in the clubhouse with the 36-hole lead. Hakula fired Texas' low second round of 5-under 67. He found an eagle on No. 10, four birdies on Nos. 3, 8, 9 and 13, and a lone bogey on the 16th hole. Vegas' second-round scorecard included four birdies (Nos. 4, 6, 7 and 8), one bogey (No. 11) and 13 pars. Freshman Brandon Stone (72-68) and senior Cody Gribble (73-70=143) led the Longhorns with six birdies each. Stone is currently tied for fifth place at 4-under 140, and Gribble and sophomore Kramer Hickok (72-71) are three back and tied for 14th.
