Gribble tied for lead after 36 holes at Amer Ari Invitational
Feb. 7, 2013
WAIKOLOA, Hawaii -- Senior All-American Cody Gribble led the No. 2 Texas Men’s Golf team in the second round of the Amer Ari Invitational with a 4-under-par 68 Thursday afternoon at Waikoloa Kings’ Course. Gribble, a member of Texas’ 2012 NCAA Championship squad, is the 36-hole co-leader at 7-under 137 (69-68). Also aided by another subpar round by freshman Brandon Stone (69-69=138), the Longhorns (279-283=562, -14) finished the day at 5-under 283 and remained in third place in the team standings. En route to his season-best 68, Gribble offset bogeys on the sixth and second holes – his third and 17th of the round, respectively – with a team-high six birdies. Gribble found a pair of subpars on the par-4 eighth and 10th holes before sinking three-straight birdie putts at Nos. 14-16. A fifth bird at No. 18 put him at 5-under thru 15 holes, but the bogey at No. 2 cost him a stroke. Stone opened his round with a birdie on the fifth hole and made six straight pars before making bogey at No. 1. Three holes later, he knocked in his second eagle in as many days, this one coming on the 601-yard 14th hole. He birdied the next hole, but finished the three-hole stretch with a bogey to remain at -2 thru 13 holes. Stone’s final birdie came on No. 18, and he finished with a trio of pars. He trails Gribble by one stroke at 138 for a share of the six-way tie for third place. Juniors Toni Hakula (70-73) and Brax McCarthy (71-76) are tied for 30th and 65th places, while redshirt freshman Will Griffin (77-73) rounded out the Texas squad in a tie for 89th place.
Senior Julio Vegas (72-67) strung together a nearly flawless second round scorecard while competing as an individual for the Longhorns. He notched six birdies (two, four, seven, 11, 14, 18) to just one bogey for a 5-under 67. He is tied for ninth place at 5-under 139. Sophomore Kramer Hickok (73-69=142) is tied for 23rd place while also competing as an individual. Washington (280-275=555) controls the team leaderboard, while UCLA (277-280=557) is in second place and five strokes ahead of Texas. The Bruins’ Pontus Widegren (68-69) shares the individual lead with Gribble. Texas is set to conclude the Amer Ari Invitational tomorrow beginning at 11:30 a.m. Central alongside Washington, UCLA and Southern California.
