Hakula and Spieth lead No. 1 Men's Golf to 36-hole lead at Amer Ari Invitational
Feb. 2, 2012
WAIKOLOA, Hawaii -- Fueled by second-round scores of 3-under-par 69 by sophomore Toni Hakula and freshman Jordan Spieth at the Waikoloa Kings' Course, the No. 1 Texas Men's Golf team (270-287=557) maintained its lead at the Amer Ari Invtational with a second-round score of 3-under 285 for a three-stroke lead over second-place UCLA (275-285=560). Hakula (67-69) is tied for second place at 8-under 136 and trails 36-hole leader Pontus Widegren (66-69) of UCLA by just one shot. Spieth (69-69) is tied for sixth place alongside fellow Longhorn Dylan Frittelli (67-71) at 6-under 138. A win would mark UT's fourth straight after claiming the Jerry Pate Intercollegiate (Oct. 3-4), Jack Nicklaus Invitational (Oct. 10-11) and Isleworth Collegiate Invitational (Oct. 23-25) last fall. Texas won its final three tournaments of the fall season by an average margin of 20.67 strokes. Beginning his second round on the ninth hole, Hakula made one of two bogeys at the par-4 10th hole before dropping back-to-back birdies on the 13th and 14th. He dropped to 2-under with another birdie on 17 and remained at the same score with a birdie-bogey-birdie combination on the second, third and fourth holes before making pars on his final four. In two rounds, Hakula has tallied 12 birdies. Spieth's round included six birdies and three bogeys. At 1-under through 16 holes, Spieth carded a pair of subpars on his final two holes - the fifth and sixth - for the second-straight day to drop to 3-under 69. Unlike his blemish-free scorecard that included five birdies in the first round, Frittelli's second day of action was a bit more tumultuous with an eagle, three birdies, two bogeys and one double bogey. His eagle on the par-5 fourth hole was one of 11 at the hole through the tournament.
Juniors Cody Gribble (67-79) and Julio Vegas (72-78) round out the Longhorns in ties for 54th and 82nd places, respectively, at 2-over 146 and 6-over 150. Friday's final round is set to begin at 11:30 a.m. Central in a shotgun start. Texas is paired with second-place UCLA, third-place Southern Cal and fourth-place Washington. The foursome will begin on the first, second and third holes to conclude the 54-hole event. TEAM RESULTS (THROUGH TWO ROUNDS)
