No. 7 Men's Golf sits in sixth place through round one of Amer Ari Invitational

Feb. 2, 2011

KOHALA COAST, Hawaii – Texas senior Bobby Hudson and sophomore Cody Gribble each carded a three-under 69 to lead the seventh-ranked Longhorns in round one of the Amer Ari Invitational Wednesday at the Waikoloa King’s Course.

Texas shot a 6-under 282 in the opening round and ended the day in sixth place.  USC leads the 20-team event at 17-under par.  Oregon’s Daniel Miernicki leads individually after carding a 10-under 62 in the opening round.

The shotgun format scattered the five Longhorns on three different holes to start the day.  Gribble (Dallas, Texas) finished with his three-under 69 on the strength of an eagle at the par-five 18th hole and birdies at the second, fifth and 13th holes.  Gribble is tied for 10th place alongside Hudson (Memphis, Tenn.), who scattered birdies at the second, fourth, fifth, seventh and 15th holes.

Junior Dylan Frittelli (Pretoria, South Africa), the 2010 Big 12 Conference Player of the Year, carded a 2-under 70 in the opening round with an eagle at the par-four fifth hole and birdies at the second, third and 14th holes.  Frittelli is tied for 21st place heading into the second round.  Sophomore Julio Vegas (Maturin, Venezuela) shot a 2-over 74 and sank birdies at the fourth, fifth and 13th holes.  Vegas is tied for 76th place heading into round two.

Freshman Toni Hakula (Espoo, Finland) made his collegiate debut and carded a five-over 77 with birdies at the third, fourth and 18th holes.  Hakula is tied for 104th place heading into round two.  Junior Adam Wennerstrom (Austin, Texas) played as an individual and carded a two-over 74.  Wennerstrom is tied for 76th place along with his teammate, Vegas.

Texas tees off in round two on Thursday at 11:30 a.m. Central (7:30 a.m. local).

POST-ROUND COMMENTS
Texas head coach John Fields
“We got off to a slow start in round one based on our shotgun start position.  It was the luck of the draw, but we closed well and are still in the tournament.  Bobby Hudson and Cody Gribble scored well, and Dylan Frittelli was solid, too.  Julio Vegas worked hard all day, and I look for he and Toni Hakula to play well tomorrow.  The Waikoloa King’s Course can be scored upon, and momentum will play a big part in the equation.”
