EL PASO, Texas -- The Longhorns suffered a pair of tough midseason losses – falling to Oklahoma and No. 4 SMU in consecutive weeks – to drop out of the national rankings in late October. But Texas rallied to win its final six regular-season contests, including a 53-16 thrashing of Texas A&M and a 33-7 win over No. 6 Arkansas, to wrap up a spot in the Sun Bowl.

For the second time in three years, the Horns would square off against North Carolina – their opponent in the 1980 Bluebonnet Bowl where the Tar Heels were 16-7 victors.

This time around it appeared that Texas would gain revenge. The eighth-ranked Longhorns overcame a shaky offensive performance and carried a 10-3 lead into the fourth quarter.

Texas jumped on top 7-0 after Ronnie Mullins recovered a blocked punt in the endzone near the end of the first quarter.

Rob Rogers boomed a 53-yard field goal in the second quarter to put the Heels on the board, but UT’s Raul Allegre countered with a 24-yarder of his own at the end of the half and Texas led 10-3. Plus, Carolina’s star RB, Kelvin Bryant, left the game with an ankle injury and would not return.

Five minutes into the second half, Texas looked to extend its lead after moving deep into UNC territory. The Longhorns, facing third-and-goal from the Carolina one, went to FB Ervin Davis twice to find the end zone. Davis was unsuccessful both times and the Tar Heels seized the momentum.

In the fourth quarter, Carolina vaulted into the lead with three field goals, beginning with a 47-yard boot by Rogers on the first play of the final frame.

Four minutes later Brooks Barwick sent one through the uprights from 24 yards out and the Heels trailed 10-9. Barwick again connected, this time from 42 yards out, and the Heels led for good with less than five minutes on the clock.

Ethan Horton, who filled in for the injured Bryant, added an insurance score with 2:17 remaining, and seconds later the Heels fell on a loose ball in the endzone to finalize the 26-10 win.

Horton rushed for 119 yards on 27 carries, all in the second half, en route to offensive MVP honors. Texas managed only 130 yards of total offense on the chilly Christmas Day affair, which was played in intermittent snow flurries.
