NEW ORLEANS -- First-year head coach Darrell Royal inherited a program that, in the year prior to his arrival, went 1-9 and hadn’t played in a bowl game in five years.

It appeared that his Longhorns would have to wait another year to return to bowl action as Texas stood 4-3-1 with two games remaining in the regular season.

However, he rallied his troops to consecutive wins over No. 17 TCU and No. 4 Texas A&M to set up a Sugar Bowl meeting against seventh-ranked Mississippi.

Unfortunately, UT’s luck ran out and the Rebels rolled to a 39-7 triumph over the 11th-ranked Longhorns.

Texas turned the ball over eight times and never was able to mount a serious challenge.

The Rebels churned out 304 yards rushing, including a 92-yard score late in the game. UT’s only touchdown came courtesy of George Blanch’s 1-yard plunge in the fourth quarter.
