NEW ORLEANS -- The Texas defense limited sixth-ranked Alabama to just 103 total yards and Bobby Layne provided all the offense needed in the Longhorns’ 27-7 triumph in the 1948 Sugar Bowl.
Playing in his final collegiate game, Layne single-handedly outgained the Tide, passing for 183 yards and one score while adding a rushing touchdown en route to Most Outstanding Player honors.
His first score came in the opening quarter when he found Ralph Blount in the end zone from four yards out. The Tide evened the score shortly before the half when Ed White took an eight-yard toss from Harry Gilmer to the end zone.
Both teams struggled offensively in the third quarter, but the opportunistic Longhorns blocked an Alabama punt and Victor Vasicek recovered the ball in the end zone to put Texas on top for good.
Lewis Holder extended the lead to 21-7 early in the fourth quarter when he intercepted a Gilmer pass and returned it 18 yards for the score.
Layne capped his brilliant UT career with a one-yard rushing touchdown to provide the final margin of victory.
