MIAMI -- Eighth-ranked Georgia entered the 1949 Orange Bowl undefeated in bowl contests, and many believed the Bulldogs would remain perfect after taking on the unranked Longhorns. But a power rushing game, sparked by 117 yards from the legendary Tom Landry, helped Texas rally for a thrilling 41-28 victory.

On the Horns’ second play from scrimmage Georgia’s Alvin Bodine picked off a Paul Campbell offering and returned it 71 yards for the score.

On their ensuing possession, the Longhorns marched 63 yards in nine plays to knot the game at 7-7 on Raymond Borneman’s four-yard touchdown scamper.

A Georgia turnover would lead to UT’s next score, a 14-yard Landry burst that capped a three-play drive and the Longhorns led 13-7 at the conclusion of the first quarter.

The teams traded rushing touchdowns in the second frame and Texas took a 20-14 lead to the break.

Midway through the third quarter Campbell atoned for his first-quarter interception, finding Ben Procter for a 25-yard score that pushed the UT advantage to 27-14.

The Bulldogs, eager to keep their perfect bowl record intact, responded with back-to-back scores and clung to a 28-27 lead with less than five minutes to play.

The Horns, as they had done all day, continued to call upon their ground game and moved 69 yards on 11 plays, punctuated by Randall Clay’s two-yard touchdown plunge, to reclaim the lead, 34-28.

After stopping Georgia’s ensuing drive, Texas tacked on an insurance score as Clay bulled into the end zone from four yards out to seal the victory. Clay finished with 70 yards on 13 carries and Billy Pyle added 76 yards on 11 rushes.

Texas outgained the Bulldogs 402-217, including a staggering 332-56 advantage on the ground.
