JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- For the first time in eight years, the Longhorns found themselves outside the state of Texas for the holidays. The 11th-ranked Longhorns headed to Jacksonville, Fla., for a Gator Bowl showdown with No. 6 Auburn.

On a day that seemed perfectly suited for a football game – clear skies, 63 degrees – both teams were far from perfect. Texas fumbled the ball five times and committed eight turnovers; the Tigers fumbled seven times and had seven turnovers. Despite both teams’ troubles holding on to the ball, Auburn rolled to a 27-3 win.

The Tigers stopped the Longhorns on the Auburn four-yard line following the opening kickoff and Texas never seemed to recover.

Auburn got its first chance with the ball at its 40 and promptly drove 60 yards for its first touchdown. The drive took 12 plays and was capped when Phil Gargis connected with Ed Butler for a seven-yard TD pass.

Texas again started in the hole as a clipping penalty on the ensuing kickoff put the Horns on their own two-yard line.

Shortly thereafter the Horns fumbled and Auburn took over at the UT 27. Two Mitzi Jackson runs covered the distance to the endzone as Auburn went up 14-0 with only nine minutes gone in the game.

Near the end of the first quarter, Earl Campbell moved Texas into Auburn territory and the Horns had some hope. Although the drive would sputter, the Longhorns came away with three points thanks to a 35-yard Billy Schott field goal.

Minutes later, Texas got a huge break when the Tigers turned the ball over on the UT goal line. But after three-and-out, Texas was forced to punt and Jim McKinney blocked the kick out of the endzone for a safety.

As bad as things had gone for the Longhorns – all four of their first-half fumbles occurred within their own 20-yard line -- they trailed only 16-3 at the break.

Neither team generated offense in the third quarter, and the game was out of reach when Butler hauled in his second touchdown reception with 5:34 to play. Chris Wilson kicked a 28-yard field goal with 0:09 showing on the game clock to make the final score 27-3.
