ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Texas entered the 1984 season with high aspirations and began the campaign with a No. 4 national ranking. After toppling No. 11 Auburn and Bo Jackson in the season opener followed by a 28-3 road win over Penn State, the Longhorns found themselves atop the national polls for the second time in four seasons.

A 15-all tie with No. 2 Oklahoma knocked Texas from the top spot, but the Horns stayed within striking distance of the top and were ranked third when they hosted Houston in the second week of November. The Cougars shocked Texas, winning 29-15, to all but squash UT’s hopes for the national crown.

The Longhorns were still alive in the hunt for a Cotton Bowl bid until they dropped their final two regular-season games to fall to No. 19 in the standings and earn a trip to the Freedom Bowl against unranked Iowa.

The Hawkeyes jumped on Texas 14-0 in the Longhorns’ first-and-only trip to the Freedown Bowl when All-American Chuck Long threw for a pair of first-quarter scores.

Not to be outdone, Todd Dodge tossed a pair of second-quarter touchdowns and Jeff Ward booted a 46-yard field goal to pull Texas within four, 21-17.

With time running out in the half, Long guided the Hawkeyes 64 yards in seven plays and Tom Nichol hit a 27-yard field goal with no time left to give Iowa a 24-17 halftime advantage, closing a wild and entertaining first 30 minutes.

The high scoring continued in the third quarter, but the Texas offense had no part of the fun. After a 35-yard Nichol field goal on Iowa’s first possession, Long turned the third quarter of the Freedom Bowl into his own personal showcase. Long to Bill Happel for a 33-yard score. Long to Robert Smith for a 49-yard score. Long to Scott Helverson for a four-yard score. Long to Jonathan Hayes for a 15-yard score.

In just over 10 minutes, Long buried the Longhorns with four touchdowns and Iowa celebrated a 55-17 win. Long finished 29-for-39 with 461 yards and six touchdowns and the Hawkeyes owned a startling 560 to 300 edge in total offense.
