TEMPE, Ariz. -- Fresh off a thrilling upset of No. 3 Nebraska in the Big 12 Championship game, the 20th-ranked Longhorns rolled into their second straight alliance bowl with tons of momentum. Texas would take a five-game winning streak to Tempe and battle No. 7 Penn State in the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl.

The Longhorns, making their third straight bowl appearance overall, rolled up 242 yards to Penn State’s 95 in the first half and held a 12-7 lead at intermission.

James Brown completed 13 of 18 passes for 150 yards and Ricky Williams ran for 47 yards and a touchdown on nine carries in the first 30 minutes. But a Longhorns interception, two drives halted at the Penn State 11 and a failed two-point conversion allowed the Nittany Lions to remain close.

Penn State’s opening score was set up by a Brown interception at the Texas 26 on the second play from scrimmage. The Lions then drove to the end zone in four plays, capped by a four-yard Wally Richardson toss to Curtis Enis.

The Longhorns bounced back and on the ensuing drive marched all the way to the Penn State seven. The drive stalled and Phil Dawson connected on a 28-yard field goal to cut the lead to 7-3.

The Nittany Lions went three-and-out on consecutive possessions and, on their first possession of the second quarter, Texas mounted another solid drive. This time, the Longhorns found paydirt when Williams charged across the goal line from seven yards out. The two-point conversion failed and Texas took some momentum to the break.

The second half – specifically, the third quarter – was a completely different story. Penn State put 21 points on the board with three rushing scores while limiting the Horns to just a field goal and led 28-15 after three quarters of play.

On the Lions’ final series of the third quarter, Chafie Fields set up Anthony Clearly’s 1-yard touchdown run with a dazzling double-reverse that covered 85 yards to the UT five.

Texas never threatened again and Penn State tacked on 10 more points to secure the 38-15 win.

The Nittany Lions outgained the UT offense 425-360, including a 330-118 advantage in the second half as the Longhorns played without injured DT Chris Akins and DE Gray Mosier.
