DALLAS -- Following an early-season home loss to No. 20 Colorado, the Longhorns embarked on their “Shock The Nation Tour” and rolled off nine straight wins en route to the SWC title and a No. 3 ranking in the national poll.

Texas returned to the Cotton Bowl for the first time since 1983 where it would take on No. 4 Miami, the defending national champion, in a game that had all the trimmings of a classic.

From the beginning, however, this New Year’s Day belonged solely to the Hurricanes. Five Texas turnovers and a missed field goal attempt led to a record six Miami touchdowns and a 46-3 Hurricanes win.

Before even touching the ball, Miami was assessed two dead-ball penalties and was looking at a first-and-40 situation on its opening possession. It took Craig Erickson just three plays to lead Miami to the first down and seconds later Carlos Huerta kicked a 28-yard field goal for the 3-0 lead.

Huerta added a 50-yard boot on the Hurricanes' next possession. Two possessions later, Russell Maryland sacked Peter Gardere and the ball popped loose. Miami recovered and within two plays Erickson threw for his first of four scoring passes.

By halftime Miami led 19-3, with only Michael Pollak’s 29-yard field goal keeping Texas from a scoreless first half.

Any hopes the Longhorns held for a comeback were dashed early in the third quarter when Darrin Smith intercepted a Gardere pass and strolled 34 yards for a 26-3 lead.

Texas would not score in the second half as Miami added three more touchdowns to wrap up the 46-3 victory.

Butch Hadnot had a solid game in defeat, rushing for 101 yards on 17 carries.
