DALLAS -- The National Championship was on the line in the 1960 Cotton Bowl. Top-ranked Syracuse rolled into Dallas with a perfect 10-0 mark to face the once-beaten and fourth-ranked Longhorns.

It was the first of 10 Cotton Bowl coaching appearances for Darrell Royal, who was a significant contributor to the long and storied history of the event.

The heavily-favored Orangemen wasted no time putting points on the board, scoring on their second play from scrimmage when Syracuse QB Dave Sarette pitched out to Ger Schwedes, who immediately fired a halfback pass to a wide open Ernie Davis. Davis made the reception at the 43 and raced untouched to spot Syracuse a 7-0 lead.

Davis, the 1961 Heisman Trophy winner, struck again midway through the second quarter when he plunged in from one yard out and was on the receiving end of the two-point conversion to make it 15-0.

Desperate for a swing of momentum, the Longhorns took the second-half kickoff and went to the air. The result was a 69-yard Jack Collins touchdown from Bobby Lackey that gave Texas fans some hope.

However, the two-point conversion failed, and on UT’s next possession Lackey was intercepted deep in Texas territory. Syracuse took advantage and put the game out of reach when Schwedes crossed the goal line from three yards out and the Orange led 23-6.

Texas pulled within 23-14 when Lackey scored on a one-yard run and hit Richard Shulte on the two-point conversion, but the Longhorns would get no closer.
