DALLAS -- The 15th anniversary of the Cotton Bowl pitted the third-ranked Longhorns against fourth-ranked Tennessee. Both teams carried 9-1 records and strong defensive units into Dallas. The result was a 20-14 Tennessee victory in what many consider the roughest and hardest-hitting Cotton Bowl ever.

Hank Lauricella sparked the Volunteers to an early 7-0 lead when he galloped 75 yards to the Texas five on Tennessee’s second possession. Seconds later Herky Payne passed to John Gruble for the score.

The Longhorns got their first score thanks to a big play, courtesy of Jim Lansford. The Vols were forced to punt from their own end zone, but Lansford crashed through the line and blocked the kick, and the Longhorns recovered at the eight-yard line. On fourth down, Byron Townsend tied the game at seven with a five-yard score.

Texas moved in front with under five minutes remaining in the first half when Gib Dawson capped a seven-play, 67-yard drive when he took a Ben Tompkins pass 35 yards to paydirt.

The Longhorns held their 14-7 lead until early in the fourth quarter when Tennessee drove 82 yards in 16 plays and pulled within one on Andy Kozar’s five-yard score. The extra point try was wide, however, and with 10 minutes to play the Volunteers still trailed.

Trying to burn the clock, Texas kept the ball on the ground and was approaching Tennessee territory when the Longhorns lost their only fumble of the day. The Volunteers recovered on the Texas 43, and with 3:11 remaining Kozar punched in the game-winning score from one yard out.
