HOUSTON -- After climbing to No. 2 in the national rankings in late October, things fell apart for the Longhorns and they finished the regular season with losses in four of their last six games.
Despite the late-season slide, an unranked Texas squad found itself matched up against No. 13 North Carolina in the Bluebonnet Bowl.
The Tar Heels played error-free football and matched the best season in UNC history with a 16-7 victory. Carolina locked up its 11-1 record thanks to Amos Lawrence, the game’s Offensive MVP who ran for 104 yards and a score, and a stout defense that allowed just two first downs and 36 total yards in the second half.
Lawrence put Carolina on top early when he dashed 59 yards for the score on the Tar Heels’ fourth play from scrimmage. Carolina was unsuccessful on the two-point conversion and led 6-0.
The Longhorns countered 10 minutes later when Mike Luck plunged in from one yard out to cap a seven-play, 70-yard drive and Texas claimed a 7-6 edge.
Carolina regained the advantage for good midway through the second quarter on a one-yard Kelvin Bryant run following a Texas turnover at the UT 33.
Bryant wasn’t too far behind Lawrence in the final rushing column, finishing with 82 yards on 15 carries to go along with four receptions for 31 yards
