HOUSTON -- After splitting their first six games of the 1960 season and falling out of the national rankings, the Longhorns regrouped to win their final four contests and earn a spot in the Bluebonnet Bowl against No. 9 Alabama.

It marked the second time the two storied programs would square off in a bowl game following their 1948 Sugar Bowl showdown in which Texas rolled to a 27-7 victory.

In the rematch, offense was scarce and defense ruled the afternoon as the squads battled to a 3-3 tie. It was a scoreless first half in which neither team could generate a sustained drive.

Alabama finally broke through midway through the third quarter when Tommy Brooker booted a 30-yard field goal following a seven-play, 21-yard drive.

The scoreboard continued to read 3-0 well into the fourth quarter when the Longhorns put together their longest drive of the afternoon.

Texas drove 71 yards on 13 plays but was unable to punch the ball into the end zone and settled for a 20-yard field goal by Dan Petty with 3:44 to play.
