Iowa -- Alamo Bowl game quotes

TEXAS

QB COLT McCOY
On having success throwing the ball and little success with the run:
We were just gonna do whatever it took to win. That’s what Coach Davis told me, ‘You don’t know what their going to do in the game but you’re gonna have to take what they give you, every snap and eventually chip away. That was our mentality coming in.

On having any rust early in the game because of injuries: You tell me. I’m just glad to be back, I had my confidence back. Coach Brown talked about dedication and family and I dedicated that game, and those three senior offensive linemen are like family to me. I can’t say enough about them, I’ll miss them so much. They’re incredible.

On the team as a whole playing better: Aaron Ross got us started in the end zone. We go 80 or so yards and scored right before the half. That turned the game around for us. Nobody gave up and everybody believed and kept playing.

S MICHAEL GRIFFIN
On the defensive stand at the end: I think coming into the game we were a little rusty. We had a couple of missed tackles, and I think within the first eight minutes of the game, they put 14 points up on the board and from there, we had to contain them. Drew Tate is a great quarterback. He was able to keep himself alive and his receivers did a great job re-routing and getting open.

On the defense getting their swagger back: I think our swagger is back, but then again, they are going to need to have a new swagger coming in next year. There are a lot of people leaving and some people are going to need to step it up.

On if Coach Akina's job calling plays: I think Coach Akina did a good job of being the defensive coordinator. I think he did a great job out there; he put us in great positions to make plays. We were able to get a turnover inside the red zone, and I think that was a great thing. He used Aaron Ross' strengths and he was able to make a play.

On being down 14-0: We still had a lot of time left. Against Texas Tech we were able to come back, and we have been in that situation plenty of times. We were just able to come back unlike the A&M and Kansas State games.

On coming out flat: I think we were just rusty. We haven’t played in over a month. We just came out here and got the rust off in the first half. We came out in the second half and got going on defense.

On Aaron Ross: Ross is a playmaker. Ross can change the game at any given time. He did it time in and time out throughout the whole season. He did it the whole year; it didn’t come as a surprise. You know that Ross can make a play at any given time.

RB SELVIN YOUNG
On the long wait for this game: Coming into this game we felt like our ship was fine. We just had a little bent sail on top and we were just floating in the ocean a little bit. We just had to patch that up, time heals wounds, so we got back and set sail again. That was our only obstacle to come over and if we didn’t have those obstacles, I feel like we would have been accomplishing our goals. Our goal tonight was to come out and win and to play physical and finish and I feel like we accomplished that.

On the power game: All running backs enjoy that power game, but coming into today it was understood that they don’t like to give up running plays. So you always try to go and come back at their biggest strength with what we feel our strength is. We were going to force it at them and make them understand that we were going to continue to try to run the ball and that was going to open up the pass plays and everything else. I felt like it was a complete game called by Greg Davis today.

On winning 10 games for all four years: It's incredible. It has been a great run and I have learned a lot about myself and these guys in the locker room. You understand that you grow up while you're out on the field and to finish. You have to play every play like it's your last. I know that for a fact. I have grown and I have learned a lot and I'm excited about whatever life has to offer for me next.

On Colt McCoy: I've been saying from two a days that he's a guy who has confidence and a guy who was going to step up and do the job. I was just letting you guys wait and see. I have always been honest on my thoughts about the guy, and I feel like he's going to be possibly one of the greatest quarterbacks, if he keeps growing up and progressing in the way that he has. He has the best deep ball I have ever seen -- college, pro or high school. His decision-making is incredible and he has a bright future.

OG KASEY STUDDARD
On Colt McCoy: We rested him, we rested him really well and he played his butt off tonight. I can't say enough about that kid; he pretty much won 10 games for us this year. I have a lot of respect for him.

On his career and what he will remember: I have to say the team, just the all of the great times I've had with these guys in the locker room and all of the guys that have graduated. Those guys and playing with them is the biggest thing I will remember.

On winning 10 games every year: I'm not disappointed about anything that's happened since I've been here. I'm just sad that it's over, but I'm off to do bigger and better things. I'm going to have to make money and be a grown-up. I had a great run and I love it. I'm glad I came here and I had no doubt about going anywhere else.

DT FRANK OKAM
On ending the season with a win: It sets the tone for our season next year. It ends the season on a good note after those losses and gets the bad taste out of your mouth because you don’t want to worry about that with three losses to end the season in the off season. It's obviously a good thing to end on a good note.

On the adjustments made in the second half: It's always good to play aggressive. Coach Akina wanted a very aggressive style in the second half, instead of sitting back on some of those screens and some of the stuff they were hitting us with in the draw. Being able to tackle and make some plays is always a bonus. I think we did more of that in the second half.

WR QUAN COSBY
On if there was too much pressure put on the team: You know we pressed a little bit. We got a little uptight out there, but it happens. We had a little time off and guys were really excited to play and a little over anxious, but they settled down, and our leaders stepped up and we played the fourth quarter strong and came up with a big win.

On the first touchdown drive: It was huge. A long drive like that after being down 14-3 that is huge for the momentum. Especially when your fans fill up the stands, you want to get them on your side and excited and rolling. It also wears down the defense because you go one, two, three and then you get the first down and it's really huge for the momentum.

On his seven receptions: When your number is called you make the play. You step up and make plays for Colt [McCoy] and for the offensive line that is giving him time. Our number one goal out there is to try and make plays not only catching the ball, but also blocking for him.

On what this win means for next year: For one, it gets that bad taste out of our mouths. Those last two games as you all know were pretty tough and now we have a real nice surge with a win against a good team. It is a good start to our off-season and we can have really good practices. Again, it is a good start to our spring and it is real uplifting when you come off of a win.
